dog is suposed to get used to a crate but when we rescued him he had been stuck in a crate for 6 months. i need help!

we dont know what happened to him befor the rescue team found him and then he was stuck in a kennel for 6 months befor we found him on pet finder from animal planet. i hate having to force him into his crate every day when i leave for school. and then he scratches at the door and wines and cries. :-(
