Dog has eaten gone off chicken
Hi all, last night i chucked out a chicken carcass, i realised it was out of date by about 4 days (the fridge is in the pantry, i dont look in it everyday!) and my naughty jack russell got in to the bin last night and ate some of it.
He is on a raw meat diet, which has done wonders for him, but right now he is unhappy and swollen... he is also known for chewing up things he shouldnt like nappies and socks! but always passes anything untoward pretty easily.
he went to the vets on tuesday and given a clean bill of health.... what are the chances of a shop bought out of date english marked chicken carrying anything sinister? shall i give him some pumkin to help him pass it through? vet is closed until monday and im unsure how much of an emergancy this is.
Thank you for your time, Jo.

Giving him pumpkin or anything else in hopes to make things pass can do more HARM than good.
If it was just eating bad chicken i would think a bad case of diarrhea may in his near future but if he ate something else you don't know about and it caused a blockage, he will need vet care immediately.
Eating socks is VERY BAD for your little guy. Keeping them in a place where he can't get such things will save you a HUGE vet bill to have it removed if it does cause a blockage and it ensures your dogs safety.
If he doesn't go to the bathroom soon, an emergency vet visit should be in order.

Well, if the thing was raw he should be ok. If the chicken sat there cold in the refrigerator even though it was a little out of date the dog should be fine.
However the whole chicken had lots of bone ratio so you may expect him to be constipated for the next couple of days. Monitor him and fast him for the amount he ate. Small dog - big chicken fast 2 days to give him time to poop it out.
If he is eaten a small chicken fast one full day and feed or offer food the next full day at the end of the day.
If he is not hungry he needs to fast then the two full days.
maybe some plain yogurt to coat the stomach I would give one Tablespoon only.
watch him closely and fast him. good luck.
Puppy proof the house buy a tall hamper with a lid for socks.

I agree about fasting for a day or two. That is what we did when my old girl ate a whole chicken that was thawing on the counter. Her belly was swollen from over eating and she was sick looking for a day. Just make sure you have lots of fresh water down.

My youngest dog will eat anything she can find, so I understand your concerns.
At this point, you aren't sure if it is the chicken making her ill, or if she may have eaten something else without your knowing it?
If it is the chicken, it will probably pass, but you are right, uncooked chicken can be infected with salmonella. Usually a strong gutted dog can pass this off, with just feeling a little sick for a day, others don't do so well.
Just watch for signs, if it is bad chicken and his system can tolorate it, he will be fine later today. If he doesn't tolorate bad chkn, then you will need to contact the emergency number, as this could prove deadly.
If it is an obstruction, watch him while he poops, if he does so easily, no obstruction (yet) if not, then an emergency vet will be needed.
Watch for any other symptoms, and if he isn't improving by midday, you might need to contact that emergency vet after all. Since he is use to raw meat he will probably be fine.

I agree that giving him pumpkin may make things worse. Also, in cases like this, if he does have food with bacteria in it and that bacteria is sickening him, sometimes you don't want to necessarily STOp something like diarrhea. The faster the bad food comes out, the better off the dog is.
Keep in mind he may just be very full and sick from eating too much chicken.
What I'd be more worried about than the sell by date is whether or not he could have swallowed bits of bone which can cause a blockage.
If he seems very lethargic or in any pain, then I'd take him to an emergency vet if you can. Otherwise, try giving him some plain, boiled white rice (just a cup or so) instead of his regular dinner. This will soothe his digestive tract and soak up some extra acid without adding to a potential blockage like regular food might. That way, he's not deprived if he does feel better.
If you see any other signs of a blockage (straining to poop, but not being able to) consider it an emergency.
