No, of course not. You just have to introduce the collar and leash gently so it doesn't scare the pup or create a bad association. give him treats and play with him to distract him from the collar when you first put it on. If you never yank him around by the collar, he will have no reason to fear or hate it.

If your pup is a small breed, like Chihuahua or Dachshund or something else, I'd stick with the harness, though. Little dogs have such delicate necks, you don't want to put pressure on them. Most dog experts say little dogs should only be walked on harnesses, not collars.

Buckeye

Your puppy might to act the same on walks. A lot of harnesses are designed so the dogs aren't capable of pulling too hard on the leash, so using a collar instead might make it more difficult if your dog pulls on the leash while walking.

I personally think you should just stay with the harness. They are much for comfortable and safer for dogs AND puppies. You most certainly can switch to just the collar, though. Just take it easy!

Although training collars can be a big help, for many dogs a harness and good technique are all you need to achieve a loose lead walk. My 5 month old Lab is doing fine on a flat collar.

Baxter

My little Boston, I used a collar for him and then I switched it to a harness and he loved it. Use what works the best. For me, the harness was better then the collar, because Boston's have backward sneezing and this helps him breathe better.
