Could a ear infection cause my dog to hear things that aren't there?

I have two dogs that will growl or bark when someone is at the door, but late the one with the ear infection will growl or bark at the door when there aren't any noises being made.

Yes it is possible. It would also be good to have the vet double check that there isn't a foreign object stuck down in there too.
