there are so many choices and qualities of food - when I was considering changing my dogs food, I went to petfoodauthority.com to compare and help make a decision (I could read the ingredients, guarantees analysis, etc). Hope this helps

Likely it makes little difference. ALL the commercial foods are formulated to the same AAFCO requirements. If the puppy is doing fine on Royal Canine, and you don't mind paying for the hype, I would stick to it. Very little of what you hear about dog food has any facts behind it.

The bottom line in commerical dog food is to feed the lowest amount of grain and grain bi-products and the highest quality of protein. I always suggest to ppl that you compare the labels closely and feed the best food you can afford.

I think Natural Balance is the better food, but I'd have to see the ingredients list again to know for sure. I currently feed "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul", which has several meat sources. Costs about $24, so if you want a decent food for a pretty reasonable price, I recommend that.

Hi there! The best thing to do is to read the ingredient labels of the food. As Dieta noted, you should avoid corn - and I would add, wheat and gluten, as they can cause allergies. Also avoid any "protein digest," as this is protein that has been rendered by chemically dissolving leftover meat off the bones (eww!) Some brands that have good quality are Solid Gold, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, Inova, Lotus (Katie likes this brand), and Blue Buffalo (this is a fairly new brand). Dogster has a forum on feeding raw, if you really want to learn about alternatives. Sometimes I cook for Katie - when chicken is on sale, I boil it until it falls off the bones, which I toss out, then add barley, rice, carrots, sweet potatoes, and turnips (or some combination of those ingredients). He is baby so wellness just for pups is good choice or I say Solid Gold puppy foods are good. NB not so good , esp. potato and duck. royal canin 24 for german shepherds is good. But the other formulas have lots of corn. So, beware of that. There is some few holistic brands out there but make sure you read the labels for coccium and corn.
