Can I train my Samoyed puppy not to bark with a shock collar?
I want to get a Samoyed puppy but I live in an apartment. I look forward to training him/her and giving my dog all the love and affection it needs. Like the Samoyed breed, I too like being outdoors, jogging, hiking and so on. My apartment complex even has a dog park. However, I have one concer. I work nights and I don't want the dog to bark all night when I'm not there. How can I teach it to not do this? Can put a shock collar on it only for the 6-8 hours I'm at work? Any advice or experience is welcome. Thank you

Bark collars... where to start. Some dogs figure it out right away and stop barking when they are wearing the collar. Others just plow ahead and keep barking, they ignore and get used to the shock. The groomer I go to told me she used a bark collar on her Blue Heeler and she still barked, plus when they took the collar off to give her a bath, they noticed it had burned a hole into her neck!
Many of these training collars caution users not to leave them on for more than 3 hours per day because of this.
I think if you get a Samoyed, crate train it from day one, sleep in the crate at night, etc, so she is used to being crated and won't make a fuss when you go out. It's NOT a given that a Samoyed will bark incessantly if you are proactive and crate train it from the beginning.

Socialize your dog, excercise your dog. Do things that challenge the dog physically and mentally, and when you leave, have someone check on your pup.

Have to agree with others. A shock collar is quite a drastic step. My dogs will howl/bark when I leave, but it only lasts for about 30 secs. I know because I have tested it by "leaving" then sneaking back to the door. I have practiced leaving & returning from an early age. I don't crate my guys, but you can certainly crate train so they know their crates/x-pen is a good safe place to be.

Toy poodles are famous for barking. I raise them, and I have never had a barker. I didn't realize that until I got seven month old Riley last week from another breeder and he hasn't stopped barking since. I am practicing the ignore it and reward for not barking and I am sure that will work since that is how I've raised all of my own with no barking issues at all, and he is already getting better. My point is that the ones I raise are not allowed/encouraged to develop barking behaviors and that is the best way to deal with it.
If you keep him/her active when you can and use positive training and rewards, you will most likely NOT have an issue. The pup will be sleeping all night if he/she's had enough exercise and stimulation all day.
Good luck with your new baby!!!

SHOCK COLLARS ARE NEVER THE ANSWER!!! They can seriously harm your pet! Teach him not to bark by offering him trewats when he's quiet

I think bark collars are harsh and mean. It's just making them SCARED to bark. That's wrong. You shouldn't be scared to talk to other people because you have a shock collar on.
