Two of my Pits have seasonal allergies and that's what it sounds like. They can have benadryl, one 50mg tablet but I would get him checked by the vet to be positive there is nothing else wrong.

It could be allergies, though dogs don't typically get a runny nose like we do from seasonal allergies. It's possible, though. I would also want the vet to rule out a foreign object like a foxtail.

The other thing it could be is a case of kennel cough, which is a very generic name for a virus that dogs get that is akin to the human cold virus.

Contrary to what you said in your question, bacterial infections are the ones treated with antibiotics, not viruses. It's the viruses that go away on their own and the bacteria that needs medication to be cured. But sometimes vets do prescribe antibiotics for viral kennel cough because aspiration of excess mucous into the lungs and bronchial tubes can cause bacterial pneumonia and they like to see dogs on a short course of antibiotics to prevent this type of secondary infection.

I would take the dog to the vet. And keep in mind it's highly contagious and he should be confined to the yard/home and not taken on walks for about 14 days.

He could have some allergies to something this time of year. If it doesn't go away, I would take him to the vet. As for suggesting something to give him, I would ask your vet.
