Can clumping cat litter cause constipation in my chihuahua puppy? she has been snacking on the kitty poop occasionally
My 4 month old chihuahua has been enjoying kitty snacks lately. Sometimes she gets very constipated, passes gas audibly, and won't eat til she finally poops. Doesn't seem sick otherwise, but seems uncomfortable when she passes gas.

I don't know if it is still the same, but when clumping kitty litter first came out the clumping agent was PORTLAND CEMENT!!! Certainly not something I would want inside my dog. Even if they have removed this as an ingredient, the previous poster is right in that this stuff will absorb all the moisture from your pups intestines and clump inside of her. It is possible that at some point it will cause a complete blockage, which is going to mean emergency surgery. I know it used to contain a warning label to prevent ingestion of it. Since I won't use it, I don't know if that label is still there. I refuse to allow it in our rescue since it is almost impossible to get out of a kitty litter box... it DOES seem like cement when it has set overnight with urine in it. With stray and feral cats we change litterboxes several times during the day and that stuff does not work under those circumstances. And, it doesn't even work as sand in an icy driveway emergency! It just gets slippery.

Please don't let your dog eat that! It clumps with moisture, your dog's insides are moist. Clumping cat litter can lead to intestinal blockages and other problems, and it wouldn't take much with a tiny pup like Zoey!
Keep the litter box out of her reach or switch to something non-clumping; I would hate to see such a little cutie die because of her kitty snacks.

Im gonna have to say yes to your question. The litter is probably causing gas and discomfort. The poo itself shouldn't be consumed, but the litter can be down right dangerous.
We all know how it feels to have a little trapped gas, well it is the same for animals, which is why you see signs of discomfort when she passes it. So, no more "kitty snacks" for Zoey. :o(
Good luck. Zoey looks like a sweetheart!!!

I agree you want to stop her from eating it. Can you put the litter box up somewhere the cats will use, but she can't reach? I am sure she is small enough to get in to anyplace the cats can.
If managing to keep her from eating it doesn't clear up the problem, I would talk to the vet.
Please don't give her canned pumpkin or something to push it out. If there is a blockage, that could make things worse. Just let her body deal with it until you solve the problem.

sounds like cat litter problems alright. I don't know how you could stop the problem but I would soon.
I have to agree a little puppy like this could get a blockage and that would not be good at all.
good luck with the problem.

I don't know what side effects eating cat litter will cause, but you can try getting cat litter made out of corn. That should keep your dog from cat litter side effects. My Grandmother has that problem with her dogs too and that is what she did.
