you need to be the leader or there will be other behavior problems to follow for sure. Hold a treat or favorite toy at your side and encourage him to walk by your side, when he does he gets the reward, keep repeating every walk

I agree with Sadie, and have another suggestion for you as well.
When Dagger pulls on the leash, don't jerk, just stop, or back up a little. Don't continue walking until he turns to look at you, or until he lets up tension on the leash. If you are consistent, it shouldn't take long.

I agree with Winnie. When Dagger starts to pull simply stop and wait. When Dagger relaxes on the leash continue walking. You may only get 3 steps forward before he starts to pull and you need to stop again. When training Deogie as a wee pup it might have taken us 10 mniutes to get 2 houses down but patience on my part won the battle. I always had a pocket full of treats and when Deogie walked where I wanted I would treat. I always walked him before meal time, this way he was hungry and his focus would be on treats and wanting more. He soon realized pulling meant no walk but he also realized treats and adventure came quickly when he walked by Mom's side.

All the answers are great. But i'd also like to add something that really helps. Buy a head halti. It is a head collar. It prevents them from pulling because it will alter the direction of their snout if they do. And don't give your dog alot of slack on the leash so he's forced to stay at your side. The more slack he has the more he's gonna run and pull. And another suggestion for the head halti is MAKE SURE you put it on correctly or it won't work right. You can get them at petco and petsmart for 12 bucks. Totally worth it.

i have a gsp and they are stubborn if they dont want to do something they wont and he used to pull really bad on the lead so i got a dog trainer and that did not work the dog trainer said to me that there was nothing he could do and to have the dog put down so i thought i would do it myself and i got him a choke chain and everytime he started to pull i would stand still so the chain got tight so he would stop and then he realised if i pull that chain is going to get tight and he has lernt from that so now when he forgets himself i say heel and it works try it that if you dont like the sound of a choker chain you can get slip leads that work the same but they just rope

Saying "nope" and jerking him won't get you far. Use a simple word that you would only use for this behavioral problem, such as "heel".
Dagger also needs a good harness, along with some tasty treats. You need to be patient with him, too. Try to keep everyting calm, and don't get angry with him if he doesn't get it for a while. It sometimes takes a while for dogs to learn this new way of walking.
You shouldn't lead them, and they shouldn't lead you, either. Dagger should be right by your side. If you can, get a harness, then begin walking. If he pulls, then just stop completely and say "heel" or whatever command you use. Wait until he loosens on the leash, and keep walking. Praise him when he walks at your side.
Good luck!
