Am I Bathing My German Shepherd/Lab Cross Too Often/Often Enough?

I have to say, Bailey get's pretty stinky when the 1 month - 1 1/2 month mark comes around. We are currently bathing her every month or so. When she get's muddy, we only rinse, and don't use soap. We also comb her to help the shedding.

I'm pretty sure she has a Labrador coat, it is very water repellant, and dries outrageously fast.

Am I bathing her too often?

we don't really smell so she gets a bath about 2x a year. she swims and if they get muddy we rinse them out.
but since your dog is a mix breed , there might be odor in the coat. you can use more gentle things to keep the skin's ph on a normal level.
I use solid gold herbal or pet promise puppy

Wiley

I just posted this in the forums section, but it applies to your question Bailey so i've c/p'd it here:
My dogs only get a bath with shampoo when they have rolled in something or have been skunked. Squ'mey has had 2 official baths in his whole life. Wiley's last one was last October when they all got fleas. Mine are fortunate to live near rivers & the ocean, so they swim at least twice a week. For a breed like a gsd this is sufficient. Too much bathing does lead to a dull coat & itchy, flaky skin. Dogs like therapy dogs need more frequent bathing as they go into places where people are immuno-compromised. Other dogs have longer coats which may get dirty fom coming into contact with the ground. A daily grooming is essential for all dogs & can stimulate the production of healthy oils & remove loose fur/hair. I recently sold my house where we had 4 dogs & the realtor commented that there was absolutely no doggie smell!

I'm pretty sure you can bathe him as often as you like, really. If you notice that the bath isn't removing the stink, there might be something else wrong like an ear infection. This article looks like it could be helpful for you - www.netplaces.com

S'N'S Geronimo's Revenge

The dog shampoos are made to balance their coat so as to not dry them out.
You can do a bath as often as you'd like with the dog shampoo, however, I recommend only about once a week.
I have a service dog, and a service dog in training, and they both get bathed about once a week, and they've never had dandruff, itchy skin, nothing.
