After almost four years and being neutered, my crate-trained cairn continues to mark if he is inside.

He also continues to mark outside, always following after his older and younger brothers (non-cairns) to make sure that his scent is the one on top. Is there a way to prevent him from wanting to do this all the time? It's nearly impossible to have him out of his crate if he's inside the house unless he's directly on you (which a lot of the time, he doesn't mind at all! He's quite the licker lol). It would be great if we could train him so he can just be out to play when we're home and just be in his crate at night and when we're not at home. Oh, don't get me started on the barking! But that's for another time.

I should also add that he came from a pet store and was about fifteen weeks old when we finally got him, so it's possible that living in a crate for so much of his life is affecting this.

I am sure obedience training and stronger leadership would help, but at 4 years his personality is mature and difficult to change. You started out with 3 strikes against you getting a 15 week old. that is the end if not past the time when dogs accept new things best.

I doubt the problem can be solved now with advice over the internet. I think you need a good private trainer or behaviorists. Look for one with APDT certification. There are many others out there that aren't very good.
