SAN FRANCISCO, April 12, 2005 -- Dogster Inc. is thrilled to announce more than 100,000 pets have joined the online sharing communities at Dogster.com and Catster.com! You know by now that the sites are the online community for pets and pet owners. Usage of the site can be only described as passionate. Collectively the sites serve almost 10 million pages a month to more than half a million visitors.
Astoundingly there have been 2 million unique friend-to-friend connections, 1.2 million treats given and 400,000 photos uploaded.
The sites' excellence has been recognized by the industry as well. Dogster is currently nominated for a Webby Award - the most prestigious web award - in the Community category. Winners will be announced May 3. In March, Dogster was nominated for the South By Southwest Interactive Awards Community Award, and took home the People's Choice award beating out 80 other websites.
Dogster founder Ted Rheingold isn't one to rest on the success of the sites. "We expected the sites to be popular but never anything like this. With all these passionate members why not make more fun and convenient features for them, such as diaries, leaving treats or our hotel booking system dedicated just to pet-friendly establishments. In fact almost all new features are driven exclusively by what users tell us they'd like to see next. We're a very young dog and we're gonna learn every trick they ask of us."
The pet-friendly travel booking service helps users find hotels worldwide where their pets can stay with them. Other new features include pet diaries. There are more than 12,000 active pet diaries on the site -- making one in ten pets part of the blogging phenomenon.
A new Strolls section has been added to help users find the pets they're looking for online. Communities within communities are springing up as breed and area-specific users connect. "We love being able to share our diaries with other Beagles. Thanks for making such a great home for us."
Other connections are being made through the popularity-based contests that
allow users to Give Paw to deserving dogsters and catsters. Users can also connect via the free classifieds section -- more than 400 ads have been posted by users and the sections is quickly becoming the place to find local and regional services and products.
Sixteen months after the initial launch, more than 350 pets are added each day to Dogster and Catster. "It's amazing... the users bring the passion and we simply help them to share and reflect the love with each other. I doubt any of the social networking sites can say that almost half of all their users log in every month," said Rheingold. "The People's Choice Award at South By Southwest Interactive proved what we saw in the site statistics - people really love Dogster and Catster. The nomination from the Webby Awards shows the industry does, too."
